SEARCCT has successfully concluded “Fundamental Clandestine Laboratory Identification Course and Instructor Training for Law Enforcement Officers” at The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur from 6 to 10 March 2023. The five-day programme was co-organised by SEARCCT and the U.S. Department of State Office of WMD Terrorism (WMDT).
This programme was attended by sixteen (16) Malaysian participants. The participants comprise officers from the Attorney General’s Chambers of Malaysia, National Public Health Laboratory, Department of Atomic Energy (AELB), Judicial and Legal Training Institute (ILKAP), Department of Chemistry Malaysia, National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Malaysian National Security Council (MKN), Malaysian Defence Intelligence Organisation (MDIO), Office of the Chief Registrar Federal Court of Malaysia, Science & Technology Research Institute for Defence (STRIDE), and the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP).
The objectives of the training were to explore the threat posed by chemical and biological terrorism as well as the various types of clandestine laboratories. Experts were invited by U.S. Department of State Office of WMD Terrorism (WMDT) from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
Additionally, it is to examine and learn about the challenges associated with hazardous environments, to identify technical and sustainability support areas, and to evaluate the various stages of clandestine laboratory development. The course concludes with hands-on, walkthrough demonstrations of configuration techniques and simulated laboratory exercises.
The programme concluded with an closing remarks by Mr. Roslan bin Sharif, Deputy Director-General II of SEARCCT.
All the participants displayed great interest and participation throughout the programme. At the end of the programme, participants from various agencies exchange and share their knowledge and build extensive networks. Participants provided positive feedback and were impressed with the content and the quality of the speakers, noting that the programme exceeded their expectations. Moving forward, SEARCCT is currently exploring to meet the stakeholders for programmes in the near future.
