On 13 May 2024, the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT), in collaboration with the Faculty of Defense Studies and Management (FPPP) at the National Defense University of Malaysia (UPNM), organised the SEARCCT University Lecture Series (ULS).
Mr. Muhammad Afiq Bin Ismaizam, a Research Officer from the Research and Publication Division, delivered a lecture on “Terrorism: Theory and Research.” His presentation focused on terrorist networks, the impact of terrorist groups on global affairs, and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and social media in spreading terrorist ideologies.
Meanwhile, Mr. Asrul Daniel Ahmed, Director of Digital Strategic Communications (BKSD), briefed the students on “Using Generative AI to Develop Strategies Against Online Threats.” He then led a tabletop exercise named “Hands on AI Tools,” giving students hands-on experience in creating AI-driven solutions.
The ULS was attended by approximately 59 UPNM students. The ULS is a public awareness initiative that aims to educate young people about the dangers of terrorism and violent extremism. The primary objectives of the lectures were to explain the risks associated with social media and technology, outline strategies for online safety, and offer advice on responsible content creation for youth.
