Regional Aviation Security Seminar

Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT) in collaboration with the New Zealand and United Kingdom High Commissions organised a Regional Seminar on Aviation Security from 18 – 22 June, 2012 at the Renaissance Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

The five-day seminar was attended by 15 regional and 10 local participants. The foreign participants were from Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Malaysian participants came from various agencies namely the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), Malaysia Airport Holding Berhad (MAHB), Malaysian Air Force, Royal Malaysian Police, Royal Customs Department, Immigration Department as well as Malaysia Airlines(MAS) and Air Asia.

The opening ceremony on 18 June was officiated by Datin Paduka Rashidah Ramli, the Director General of SEARCCT. Present was H.E David Pine, High Commissioner of New Zealand and Mr Hiten Patel, representative from the Department for Transport, UK.

The Seminar sessions were facilitated by two experts from UK – Hiten Patel from Department of Transport and Jim Termini from Redline Aviation Security, and two experts from New Zealand – Murray Breeze and Hugo Porter from the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (NZCAA).

The main aim of the seminar was to promote regional discussion aviation security issues. It provided the opportunity for participants to enhance knowledge and understanding on – aviation security organisations ; threat to civil aviation and risks to its security; to be able to implement appropriate security policies and procedures, to meet International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and other local requirements.

Best practices from New Zealand and the UK were introduced to the participants, especially in safeguarding civil aviation operations against acts of unlawful interference, through regulations, practices and procedures.

Participants were taken on a visit to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Sepang on 21 June, hosted by Malaysia Airport Berhad. Briefings were given by DSP Maarif bin Maarof during the site visit to the LCCT Terminal.

The seminar was closed on 22 June by Dato’ Hidayat Abdul Hamid, the Deputy Director General of SEARCCT. At the closing ceremony, certificates of attendance were presented to the participants. Mr Brian Smythe, Deputy High Commissioner of New Zealand and Mr Hiten Patel representing the UK were in attendance to congratulate the participants.

The regional aviation security seminar was another successful trilateral collaboration between SEARCCT, the New Zealand High Commission and the British High Commission.
