CBRNE First Responder Training Programme Akademi Latihan Pertahanan Awam (Alpha), Bangi

APM), successfully co-hosted the “Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) First Responder Training Programme” at Akademi Latihan Pertahanan Awam (ALPHA), Bangi from 5 to 8 September 2017. This marks the second workshop jointly organised after the success in 2015. In this edition, the workshop was attended by 24 participants, consisting of staff and officers from APM of the peninsular region. DDG 2 of SEARCCT, Puan Mazita Marzuki, officiated the 3-day programme.

With the aim to provide participants with the knowledge and understanding on the trends adopted by terrorists utilising CBRNE agents and to prepare the first responders to plan and respond to CBRNE treats and incidents, SEARCCT’s established local trainers were engaged from the Royal Malaysia Police, Ministry of Health, Malaysia Armed Force, Chemistry Department and Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB).

The workshop was conducted in a manner to brief participants on various CBRNE subjects that provided valuable insights and to familiarise themselves with detection equipment for CBRNE agents. This two-fold module format also enabled participants to have a substantial amount of hands-on experience that added value to the theoretical lectures scheduled. This was coupled with demonstration exercises that helped to highlight the need for a holistic response mechanism, in the event of a possible incident.

Feedback from participants, include their appreciation for the speakers who were knowledgeable and interesting in their presentations on technical topics and for establishing such a platform for the participants to network with other agencies in exchanging and sharing information pertaining to CBRNE issues.

YBhg. Datuk Mohamed Alwi, the Head of the Emergency Department of Hospital Selayang, also encouraged participants to be proactive in conducting in-house training on CBRNE response at their respective workplace, with the speakers, who were very welcoming of such collaboration.

Overall, the workshop was a success with the participants looking forward to learn more of CBRNE and are expecting similar workshops organised by SEARCCT.
