Terrorism 101 Course, Ames Hotel Melaka – 15 and 16 October 2024

The ‘Terrorism 101 Course’ took place in Ames Hotel, Melaka on 15 and 16 October 2024. This course was joint-collaborative course by the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism and the Special Branch of the Melaka Contingent Police Headquarters. The Terrorism 101 included a combination of presentations, interactive discussions, and practical exercises.

This course aimed to equip participants with insights into terrorism concepts and
legal frameworks as well as enhancing understanding of terrorism-related issues
and challenges in Malaysia. It also centered around the improvement on
knowledge of terrorism prevention efforts in Malaysia.

Following a formal opening ceremony on the first day of the course, participants
participated in sessions aimed at gaining a knowledge of the present state of affairs in Malaysia and the challenges posed by terrorism. The Special Branch of the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Defence Intelligence Organisation (MDIO) also provided expert lectures during these sessions. In the afternoon, the Digital Strategic Communications Division of SEARCCT gave a presentation on the
significance of Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) in Malaysia.

SEARCCT’s Research and Publications Division led presentations on the second
day that examined how terrorists use the internet. Additionally, the Armament Branch of the RMP led discussions on Chemical, Biological, Radiological,
Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNe) threats. The course concluded with a group photo session, certificate presentations, and statements by the Chief of the Special Branch of the Melaka Contingent Police Headquarters.

With a focus on information gathering, threat analysis, and CBRNe threats, the
training sought to improve the abilities of Malaysian law enforcement and
intelligence professionals in comprehending and combating terrorism.
It gave participants from different agencies a chance to connect and improve
cooperation in the fight against violent extremism and terrorism in Malaysia.
