The Terrorism 101 course took place over four days, from 4 to 7 November 2024, at the Scapes Hotel Genting Highlands. Organized by SEARCCT in partnership with the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, the course saw the participation of thirty (30) officers from the department, representing various regions across Malaysia.
The course aimed to equip participants with insights into terrorism concepts and legal frameworks as well as enhancing understanding of terrorism-related issues and challenges in Malaysia while enhancing the skills of Malaysian law enforcement and first responders in understanding and countering terrorism, particularly in the areas of intelligence gathering, threat analysis, and CBRNe threats. It provided a platform for participants from various agencies to network and strengthen collaboration in efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism in Malaysia.
The first day commenced with an official opening ceremony, followed by sessions that examined the threat of terrorism and the current security landscape in Malaysia. These sessions included expert insights from the Malaysian Defence Intelligence Organisation (MDIO) and the Special Branch (E8) of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). In the afternoon, the focus shifted to the role of Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) in Malaysia, presented by SEARCCT’s Strategic Digital Communications Division. The day concluded with a briefing on the upcoming Tabletop Exercise.
On the second day, presentations addressed the use of the internet by terrorists, led by the expert from the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations. Participants also took part in discussions about Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNe) threats, facilitated by PDRM’s Armament Branch. Practical exercises, including the Tabletop Exercise, allowed participants to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life scenarios.
