The Aviation Security Workshop – Basic 2024 took place at Hilton Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from 20 to 22 August 2024. Organized by the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this three-day workshop brought together 30 participants, including aviation stakeholders, first responders, and law enforcement officials.
The workshop focused on enhancing dynamic security strategies to address evolving terrorism threats. Key objectives included establishing a robust risk management framework guided by accurate threat assessments and improving the flow of timely threat information between counter-terrorism and aviation security agencies to ensure effective security measures.
The workshop featured expert-led sessions on aviation security, focusing on managing and mitigating terrorism-related threats. Topics included arms, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), and the roles of security agencies. The sessions aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of securing Malaysia’s airspace against potential terrorist attacks.
The workshop ended with interactive elements such as a security tour of Kota Kinabalu International Airport and a tabletop exercise, allowing participants to apply their new knowledge. The final day included a recap, discussion of the security tour, and certificate distribution, enhancing participants’ skills in managing aviation security and countering terrorism-related threats.
