Chicago, US: Teen accused of 'jihad' car bomb plot due in court.
A Hillside teenager will appear in federal court today on charges he planned to detonate what he thought was a car bomb outside a downtown Chicago bar.
Adel Daoud, 18, was arrested following a months-long FBI undercover investigation. He was taken into custody after he parked a Jeep Cherokee in front of the bar Friday night and walked into a nearby alley where he tried to detonate the device, court documents allege.
The bomb, which was inert and had been constructed by FBI technicians, didn't explode, according to federal authorities.
Daoud was targeting U.S. citizens because of what he perceived as American abuses overseas and because the U.S. is at war "with Islam and Muslims," according to an FBI affidavit.
Daoud was charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to damage and destroy a building by means of an explosive.
Authorities did not disclose the name of the bar.
Daoud acted alone on Friday, although at one point he had recruited a partner, who later dropped out of the plot, according to the affidavit.
In May, two undercover FBI operatives started communicating with Daoud, who expressed interest in carrying out a violent jihad, either in the United States or abroad.
Daoud, a U.S. citizen, allegedly gave one of the agents a handwritten list of 29 potential targets in the Chicago area.
His family declined to comment Sunday. He remains in custody pending the preliminary hearing scheduled at the U.S. Dirksen Courthouse.
